Saturday June 9 is National Get Outdoors Day

National Get Outdoors Day (or GO Day) encourages healthy, active outdoor fun. On Saturday, June 9, participate in traditional outdoor activities, such as hiking, to non-traditional outdoor activities, such as reading your favorite book about nature or even having an outdoor, nature-related storytime!

GO Day was organized by the USDA Forest Service and the American Recreation Coalition (ARC). Some of the main goals of the day include reaching out to first-time visitors to national parks, as well as reconnecting our youth to the great outdoors. GO Day partners with federal, state, and local agencies.

GO Day events can be found around the area throughout the day of June 9. They offer a mix of information centers and places where guests (especially kids) can use a fishing pole, go geocaching, learn how to pitch a tent and more. Characters such as Smokey Bear, Woodsy Owl, and other interesting creatures will make special appearances.

If you're thinking about participating in GO Day, check out one of our Nature Adventure Packs to take with you on your adventures. Our Summer Reading program contains missions which are also a fantastic and fun way to get outside and explore. Check out this list of fun and nature-engaging book titles as well to get your GO Day started.
