You can tell a book by its cover. So, if a book’s cover or title “calls” to you, it's karma - pick it up! A couple of years ago I was in the library and a book by a debut author was in display. The Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill was definitely calling to me. I thought, “Who is this Joe Hill? I don’t know him and maybe his book isn’t good.”
A couple of weeks later a patron came into my office and asked me, “Have you ever read anything by Joe Hill?”
“No. Why? Is he good?” I asked.
“Well, you know that he is Stephen King’s son. I wanted to see if he writes like his father.”
Now I am kicking myself mentally! I should have listened to the book calling me! I ran to the display and thankfully it was still there!
Anyway, Joe Hill has since become one of my favorite authors. He not only has the talent of his father, but he is excellent at thinking outside the box. I would even say he thinks way outside the box. Hill also has a wonderfully satirical humor that really comes through in a lot of his writing.
Here are some of my favorite books by Joe Hill:
The Heart-Shaped Box - An aging rocker with a taste for the macabre gets more than he asks for when he buys a man’s suit from Ebay complete with a ghost.
20th Century Ghosts - A collection of short stories which all involve ghosts.
Locke & Key – A graphic novel series by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez that is also being made into a television series that will come out this fall.
Horns – When a young man’s girl friend is murdered, the whole town thinks that he did it. Of course, the demon horns that begin growing out of his forehead do not help, either.
