Whether you are opening a new business or are already running one, you’ll need information and support. Call or stop by the library where we can walk you through finding helpful books and articles and teach you how to get the most out of our online resources. 
To get started, we recommend the following resources for each step of the journey: 

From Your Library

  • Business books on starting a business, management, accounting, marketing, advertising and more in the 650 area of nonfiction.

  • The Law Collection in the Headquarters branch has business and employment law.

  • LawDepot: DIY Legal Documents
    This portal allows you to create free customized personal and business legal forms, including power of attorney, landlord/tenant agreements, wills, prenuptial agreements, purchase agreements, bills of sale, and service agreements. Quick and easy to use, edit, print, and save. This resource requires you to create an account. If you already have a Zinio login, that account provides access to LawDepot as well.

  • Zinio Digital Magazines: full digital copies of nearly 200 popular magazines - including  Bloomberg Businessweek, Economist, Forbes, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance, and Working Mother. There are no holds, no checkout periods, and no limit to the number of magazines you can download.

  • See each week's new business and investment books added to the library's catalog. Sign up with Wowbrary to receive a weekly email about these titles.

  • Small Business Resource Center: Covers all major areas of starting and operating a business: financing, management, marketing, human resources, franchising, accounting, taxes and more.(Remote access available with your library card).

  • Foundation Directory Online Professional: access this online resource at the Headquarters Branch.

  • Grants Connection: access this online resource at any branch.

  • Book lists tailored to your business and your customers.  Our librarians will custom design and produce book lists for your business.  An informative, fun giveaway.  

  • Check out these free resources: public-use computers with printers; WiFi; faxing; notary services; and group meeting space. 


  • Reference USA:  use the demographic information of more than 13 million U.S. businesses and 200 million U.S. residents to research markets, build customer lists, and write business plans and grants. Remote access with your library card.

  • PolicyMap:  community data displayed in maps, tables, or reports for marketing studies, business planning, site selection, grant applications, and impact analysis.

  • Community Profiles: these documents feature a wealth of information including demographic, economic, and educational data for Virginia. Each report is automatically updated every time we make changes to our database, so you can be assured they will always be up-to-date!

  • Fredericksburg Regional Alliance (UMW): find comprehensive demographic, economic, and commercial real estate information on the City of Fredericksburg and the counties of Caroline, King George, Spotsylvania, and Stafford. Also provides services to facilitate the creation of jobs and capital investment while diversifying the economy and increasing the tax base.

  • Virginia Economic Indicators: a quarterly publication illustrating and analyzing key economic indicators including employment, unemployment, and production workers’ hours and earnings, and other significant business related data series.

  • Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service: demographic and workforce research and analysis, leadership training, and community outreach.

  • Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce: advocates for business interests and provides business resources.

  • FREDTech: an affiliate of the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce, supports, enhances, educates, and attracts technology businesses to the region.

  • FredXchange helps businesses get started and whose members and programs are a source of support and knowledge.. and inspiration! 

  • Germanna Community College's Center for Workforce & Community Development has a plethora of classes and workshops available. Very affordable--and some are free!

  • Rotary: local clubs work to solve some of their communities' toughest challenges. Find local chapters using the Club Finder tool.

  • SCORE: helps small businesses get off the ground at no charge or at very low cost. SCORE can provide: Volunteer mentors; free, confidential business counseling in person or via email; free online business tools, templates and tips; and inexpensive or free business workshops and webinars.

  • University of Mary Washington Center for Economic Development: "collaborates with business, government, education, and private parties to promote personal, professional, and economic growth by advancing knowlege through entrepreneurship, small business development, innovation and competitiveness, research and analysis, and outreach and engagement."  Their annual Business Reference Guide is published on this site.

  • Women in Business Leadership: Facebook networking group for business women.

  • FINRA:  largest independent securities regulator in the U.S.; protecting investors by maintaining the fairness of the U.S. capital markets.

  • Financial Smarts: the Actuarial Foundation spotlights such topics as insurance, retirement planning, saving, and investing.  Read online or subscribe for email delivery.

  • 360 Degrees of Financial Literacy: investor education provided by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
