Children's Book Week, May 1-7, 2017

Get ready for a weeklong celebration of reading! The longest-running national literacy initiative in the country, Children's Book Week is dedicated to inspiring a love of reading in children and teens across America. From May 1-7, Central Rappahannock Regional Library is excited to offer a week of events that encourage young readers.

Grow a Reader Classes:

Specially trained staff present stories, songs, and activities that lay the foundation your child needs to get ready to read. We offer Grow a Reader classes for babies through age five on weekdays, as well as on evenings and weekends. Don't worry if you can't attend one this week. We celebrate early literacy every day. Wacky Wednesday: Making Mother's Day Gifts. Part of a weekly series of stories, games & crafts. Sign up needed. 

Fabulous Friday: Geek Out! Fun and games based on your favorite fandoms, from Star Wars to Harry Potter and beyond. 

Book Bingo: Learn about new books ready for check out as you play. 
Star Wars Day: Drop in for Star Wars books, games, DIY Star Wars crafts station, snap a selfie with a storm trooper, and enter to win Star Wars memorabilia. Starting May the fourth running through May the sixth. You can also check out books on our "Do or Do Not . . ." Star Wars for Kids list.

Classes for Teens:

MakerLabs: Drop in our STEM exploration labs for all ages to enjoy hands-on learning with a wide variety of high and low tech equipment and activities. Schedule is subject to change. Calls to confirm hours are welcome.

The Cage: Play video games, create art, and get together with fans of manga and anime. Drop-in. Grades 6-12.

May the 4th Be With You: Celebrate all things Star Wars with a showing of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and a mini Star Wars photo booth. Come dressed as your favorite Star Wars character to be entered into a raffle drawing! Teens & adults. Seeking more on Star Wars? Sketch Up, Draw Away: Explore the art of drawing during an open workshop with expert artists, in celebration of Comic Art Month and the Comic Art Show. All ages. A CRRL-Con event.

Trebuchet Contest: Bring your handcrafted trebuchet, and test it against your competitors! Make at home, or make in a library MakerLab. Middle school and up. Families welcome. Rules at
