It's Maggie's favorite day of the year in Wende and Harry Devlin's Cranberry Thanksgiving. She and her grandmother live on a New England cranberry farm. It's lonely and cold at the edge of the sea, but on Thanksgiving the house is warm with lots of good cooking. As part of their family tradition, Maggie and Grandma have each invited someone who otherwise would have to spend Thanksgiving alone.
Grandmother has invited Mr. Horace. He smells like lavender and has a gold-tipped cane, and he's new to town so he doesn't have anywhere to go for Thanksgiving. Maggie invites a very different guest. Mr. Whiskers has a great black beard and a sea captain's hat. He's not fancy at all, and Grandma is suspicious of him. She's sure he wants to steal the recipe for her famous cranberry bread. After all, everybody on the island wants it!
Cranberry Thanksgiving is a wonderful holiday read-aloud that includes the recipe for Grandmother's Famous Cranberry Bread -- fun to make with a grown-up's help.
