Fix it Yourself @ the Library
It always seems to happen at the most inopportune time. You need to fix your car or small engine, but you don’t have a repair manual. What’s more, the library is closed. Don’t worry! Instead of waiting for the library to open and driving all the way there, you can get the same information at home using two of our online databases. Best of all, they are available 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. Auto Repair Reference Center has information on cars including repairs, wiring diagrams, bulletins, and more. Small Engine Repair has information on all types of small engines, including outdoor equipment, motorcycles, tractors, and more.
To use either of these, visit the library’s list of databases on our Web site or go to our home page and click on the “Research” button. The databases are listed in alphabetical order. Click on Auto Repair Reference Center or Small Engine Repair, type in your library card number, and you are ready to go.
When you first connect to Auto Repair Reference Center, you will enter the year, make, and model of the vehicle and then choose from the options listed. The older the car, the more information you will be able to retrieve. Choose “Repair Information” to get step-by-step instructions and diagrams for all types of repairs, including chassis, engine, electrical, and more. Simply select the option that you want. You will see a list of precautions before you get the information that you requested. You can also download a PDF of the information, or simply print it so that you don’t have to keep running back to the computer.
Auto Repair Reference Center also has wiring diagrams, estimates of labor times and costs, maintenance intervals, technical bulletins, and diagnostic information for the “advanced DIYer.”
Small Engine Repair Reference Center has the full set of small engine repair manuals from Clymer, including ATV’s, outdoor equipment, boats, snowmobiles, motorcycles, and more. Once you are connected to the database, choose the type of engine that you are trying to repair. Choose the brand and model of your engine and a PDF of the manual will show up on your screen. Again, the database will let you print the information out to take with you as you make your repairs.
Small Engine Repair Reference Center allows you to register for free and save the information that you have found so that you can access it again. Click on “Sign In” and then “Create a New Account” to use this feature.
Whether you enjoy spending time tinkering with cars and engines or not, the library can help make the experience easier and more convenient.
