What better way to celebrate the holiday season than by creating a festive — and edible — holiday decoration that has been a Christmas tradition for centuries: gingerbread!
The library has many books devoted to this subject including "It's a Gingerbread House! Bake it! Build it! Eat it!" by Vera Williams, “Ginger Bear” by Mini Grey and “Gingerbread Baby” by Jan Brett.
After reading about gingerbread, visit some local award-winning creations in Fredericksburg. The George Washington foundation currently has a gingerbread display based on the theme “George Washington Slept Here” on exhibit through the end of the month at Ferry Farm.
If the weather outside is frightful, there is no need to leave to comfort of your home to marvel at the life-sized display of gingerbread at Walt Disney World’s Grand Floridian resort. The 16-foot-high structure holds over 10,000 shingles alone and baking begins in July to get ready for the holidays!
If you still are craving the spicy snack, visit Gingerbread Lane for gingerbread and Icing recipes, construction tips, and favorite candy for decorating. Happy Holidays!
