My Favorite Keyboard Shortcuts

Inspired by a recent computer training-on-demand session I instructed, here is a list of my favorite keyboard shortcuts.  A mouse and keyboard are a powerful combination, but with the proper keyboard shortcuts you can be a far more time-efficient user. 



Windows system key combinations

  • F1: Help

  • ALT+TAB: Switch between open programs

  • ALT+F4: Quit program

  • SHIFT+DELETE: Delete item permanently

  • Windows Logo+L: Lock the computer (without using CTRL+ALT+DELETE)

  • Windows Logo+R: Opens the ‘Run’ dialog

  • Windows Logo+D: Show desktop, minimize all open windows

Common Microsoft Program key combinations

  • CTRL+C: Copy

  • CTRL+X: Cut

  • CTRL+V: Paste

  • CTRL+Z: Undo

  • CTRL+B: Bold

  • CTRL+U: Underline

  • CTRL+I: Italic

  • CTRL+O: Open a document

  • CTRL+S: Save a document

  • CTRL+N: Create new document

  • CTRL+F: Find in document

  • CTRL+P: Print

Web Browser Shortcuts

  • CTRL+L: Moves focus to the address/URL bar

  • CTRL+T: Open new browser tab

  • CTRL+TAB: Toggle open browser tabs

  • CTRL+W: Close current tab

  • CTRL+R OR F5: Refresh page

  • CTRL+F: Find in page

General keyboard-only commands

  • F1: Starts Windows Help

  • F10: Activates menu bar options

  • ALT+underlined letter in menu: Opens the menu

  • CTRL+SHIFT+ESC: Opens Windows Task Manager

  • ALT+TAB: Switch to another running program (hold down the ALT key and then press the TAB key to view the task-switching window)

  • ALT+F4: Closes the current window
