Food for Fines

During the week of October 16-22, for every canned good that you bring to your local library branch (nothing expired, nothing dented) we'll deduct a dollar from your overdue fines, up to a maximum amount of $10.00!

1 canned item = $1.00 applied to one patron account.

Donations may not be used to pay for lost or damaged library materials.

All donations benefit local area food banks.

No donations will be accepted before October 16 or after October 22.

Gone-Away Lake by Elizabeth Enright

“How glorious!”

Beginning-to-be-eleven-year-old Portia and her little brother Foster are excited to be visiting their relatives in the countryside for the summer in Elizabeth Enright’s Gone-Away Lake. Besides seeing their favorite aunt and uncle, there is Katy the boxer dog who has just had a litter of puppies “with flat faces like pansies, and ears that felt like pieces of silk, and claws like the tips of knitting needles”—but best of all for Portia is having time to hang out with her cousin Julian, he of the hundred-thousand freckles. Closer than a friend and nicer than a brother is how she thinks of him. Julian is interesting and interested in everything that goes on around him.

Llama, Llama Red Pajama by Anna Dewdney

On Thursday, October 6, the library is participating in Jumpstart's Read for the Record.

Visit the children's section of your nearest branch to share the book, "Llama, Llama Red Pajama" by Anna Dewdney or read it online from home (or wherever you are!).  For each person who reads this book online, the Pearson Foundation will donate a book to a preschool classroom served by Jumpstart!

Jumpstart is hoping to set a record of over two million readers so, on Thursday, October 6 let us know you read it. It's an easy way to make a difference!
