The Internal Revenue Service is recommending that taxpayers take steps now to learn about changes that could affect their ability to timely file their 2016 tax returns and get their refunds as quickly as possible.  Visit the IRS here for more information. 

Federal and state tax forms and publications can be printed out at all branches. The state government no longer provides print copies of forms and publications to the library for distribution. State forms and publications may be found online here. The federal government gives us a limited selection of print forms. For a full range of federal forms and publications:

Local IRS Office

Federal and Virginia state tax return preparation is available for individuals who qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).  Contact the local IRS office for more information:

AARP Tax Aid Clinics at the Library

IRS-trained volunteers will be available to prepare simple tax returns beginning in February. Appointments may be made one week in advance. Walk-ins will be accepted as space permits. Taxpayers must bring social security cards, photo IDs, last year's return, and all other necessary forms and receipts (W2, 1099, 1095A, etc.), childcare provider's ID number, amount of any other income, and bank documents showing routing and account numbers.  In the case of inclement weather, sites may be closed.  Call the branch for more information and to make an appointment.

United Way Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Clinics at the Library

Eligibility for the clinic is a maximum 2016 income of $64,000, regardless of family size.  No appointments needed. Taxpayers must bring social security cards, photo IDs, last year's return, and all other necessary forms and receipts (W2, 1099, 1095-A, etc.), childcare provider's ID number, amount of any other income or economic stimulus payments if received, and bank documents showing routing and account numbers if requesting direct deposit.
In the case of inclement weather, sites may be closed. For more information on eligibility and all area EITC clinics, taxpayers can visit Rappahannock United Way online or call 540-373-0041.

Download forms and instructions for the present year back to 1990. Adobe Acrobat Reader is freely available to download and use for viewing and printing documents. You may also read lengthy publications online, if you desire. Files may be searched by keyword. Some of the more popular forms are available in a "fill-in" version. This page also links to states' tax sites and electronic filing options. Check the IRS News and Events page for more information.
AARP Online Tax Counseling
The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) provides information to help you complete your federal tax return. Site offers frequently asked questions and an opportunity to ask questions of trained volunteers.
Virginia Department of Taxation
Individuals are encouraged to file electronically using iFile. You can find Virginia tax forms from 1995-present online. Answers to frequently-asked questions and forms for businesses and estates can be found on the department's home page. You may also request that forms be mailed to your home, or download them in Adobe portable document format (.pdf) from home or in the library. Otherwise, forms are not being mailed out.
Spotsylvania County Office of the Commissioner of the Revenue
Information about taxes is available through the Commissioner of the Revenue. Spotsylvania residents can pay their personal property taxes, real estate taxes, and other county bills online using their credit cards.
Stafford County, Office of the Treasurer
This site has information about other county regulations. Stafford residents can pay their personal property and real estate taxes online.
