"Little, Big" by John Crowley

One of my all-time favorite books - big, romantic; with plotlines
following many characters:

Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe is a wonderful book. It's funny, it's southern, it has quirky characters, but a wonderful sense of family and place.  Here are similar titles that I think you'd enjoy:

Isle of Palms by Dorthea Benton Frank
Ladder of Years by Anne Tyler
Little Bitty Lies by Mary Kay Andrews

 The Garden Angel by Mindy Friddle. Two women, both alienated from
mainstream society, improbably connect and help to bring each other back
to life in a small, down-at-the-heels Southern town (synopsis).

Here are some suspenseful and somewhat scary books that you may like if you like R.L. Stine.

Where Are the Children? by Mary Higgins Clark

Here is the novel that established Clark as one of today's most phenomenally successful authors. After a terrible marriage and the tragic deaths of her two children, Nancy changes her name, hair, and residence and finally finds peace--until the nightmare begins again.

(This one is more suspense, but it will have you on the edge of your
seat!)

Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury

We can suggest books with the same type of complex characterization, or with some
of the same subjects content (such as family dynamics, bullying fathers,
missionaries, or clash of cultures), but not necessarily all together!
 

The antelope wife : a novel / Louise Erdrich

There are many "addiction memoirs" in our collection. Some are funny, some are bleak and despairing, some a combination. Try these titles:

"Junky" by William S. Burroughs. May be the first book in this sub genre of memoir.

"Go Ask Alice" by Anonymous. A young adult classic and a cautionary tale. The diary of a young woman chronicles her descent into addiction.

"Manic: A Memoir" by Terri Cheney. A successful lawyer recounts her struggles with a biopolar disorder and substance abuse.

If you liked "The Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini, you might enjoy these
other titles that also offer lots of plot twists and turns and a
sprinkling of history:

"Swallows of Kabul" by Yasmina Khadra

Eat, Pray, Love seems like a fun and inspiring travelogue. Here are some other books you might enjoy:

1) The Last American Man by Elizabeth Gilbert, a 2002 finalist for the National Book Award, is by the same author as Eat, Pray, Love. It is the true story of Eustace Conway, who moved to the Appalachian Mountains when he was a teenager. Based on several reviews, it seems to have the same humor characteristic of Eat, Pray, Love.

The World is Flat: A Brief History of the Twenty-First Century by Thomas L. Friedman is a wonderful look at the world. Here are a few titles, which you may enjoy, that deal with global business, the world, and its future.
