Most-Wanted Westerns

I’ve never really liked horses. The way they side-step with those ginormous, clippy-cloppy hooves, bare those big, big teeth, and roll those huge eyes until the whites show all the way around?  Very scary!  Yes, they are beautiful, and yes, their shiny coats are like stroking silk. But still. Horses. <shudder>

My fear of horses probably is the reason that I never really wanted to read Westerns. But I quite often looked at Westerns.  So many great covers!  So many sub-genres!  I read Doc, by Mary Doria Russell.  And then Epitaph, the sequel. I wanted more, more, more!

I still don’t really like horses, but I have discovered that I really like Westerns! Check out some favorites in my Most-Wanted list.

Kid Sheriff and the Terrible Toads by Bob Shea and Lane Smith

Drywater Gulch is about to get gobsmacked by Kid Sheriff and the Terrible Toads. The Toad brothers are a lying, stealing, chili-insulting trio who have set their sights on the sleepy desert town. Thankfully, a hero is on his way...on the back of a tortoise.

Daisy Kutter: The Last Train by Kazu Kibuishi

Daisy Kutter: The Last Train follows a feisty female trying to be on her best behavior. Ms. Kutter runs the town general store, but she was always most at her element when committing train robberies and other such deeds.

She may be trying to be a good girl at the beginning of the story, but we all know that old habits die hard. When she's asked to come out of retirement to rob one last locomotive, the offer sounds too good to be true.

Bloody Chester by J.T. Petty; Illustrated by Hilary Florido

Chester Kate's been hired to burn the town of Whale to the ground. Every last building must be razed so the railroad can push on through. Bloody Chester is about to make his mark in the only way he knows how. Maybe then everyone will stop using his other nickname: Lady Kate.

He doesn't have to worry about Whale's citizens. Most of them are already dead from the plague. They call the sickness Coyote Waits. "Waits" because it eats you from the inside. "Coyote" because...well because there's a lot of coyotes out there in the West.
