Check Out Your Bank, Credit Union, or Insurance Company

Financial Ratings Series Online

How do you know if your bank or credit union is financially stable?  Did you pick the best life insurance or property insurance company?  And did you purchase the right amount of insurance for your specific needs?

You can find the answers to these questions and more by visiting one of our newer digital resources, Financial Ratings Series Online, free to anyone who has a library card from the Central Rappahannock Regional Library.

Financial Ratings Series Online is designed to direct you toward safe banking and insurance options while helping you avoid unnecessary risk that could lead to financial losses.  It gives you independent ratings and financial planning tools you need to make informed decisions about your insurance and banking options.

The website is super easy to navigate.  You may search for banks, credit unions, or insurance companies by name, by geographic locale, or by their independent rating grade. Want to see all the banks with an A rating in Virginia?  We can get that for you!  Need to know which credit unions were recently downgrading?  We can get that for you!  Want to see a report on your company that lists historical ratings, assets, capital, net income, affiliates, principal lines of business, or where it is licensed to do business?  Got that, too!  Just click on View Report when your search results show you the name of a company you want to investigate.

Financial Ratings Series Online is just one of the many premium online resources CRRL offers library card holders. Simply enter your 14-digit library barcode number for full access from anywhere!  For more information, please contact us

Internet Business Solutions

An observation worth noting: I have recently been approached by a growing number of people wanting to build a web site for their business. This would have been a much more daunting process even a few years ago.  However the Web has evolved to meet these needs more easily.  There now exist many online storefronts through which small businesses can be run. Though I am unable to recommend one service over another, either through direct experience or secondary knowledge, here are a few of the more popular selections that can help anyone get started.

Ditch Your Cable

TV Is Dead. Long Live TV

In these lean times, we’re all looking for ways to cut household costs. You may be pondering whether you should ditch the cable TV or the broadband Internet to free up $50 a month. Take my advice and lose the cable. Heck, even if you aren’t in a financial pickle, go ahead and dump it. Your life will be better for it. Here’s why.

Increasing Your Internet Privacy

Maintaining your privacy online is a tricky matter, as I’m sure you know. And though you’re using a firewall as well as anti-spyware software, and you’ve password-protected your computer, that does almost nothing to keep your information secure online. Here are some ideas to help keep you to yourself when surfing the Web. For your convenience, I’ve divided the information into basic and advanced sections.
