It takes a community to raise readers! Encouraging summer reading as preventing summer slide helps, but more is needed. Community partners are vital to a fun and successful summer reading program, and we couldn’t do it without them! We are very grateful to our partners.
Area teachers see the effects of summer slide first-hand, so they recognize the need for students to keep reading all summer long. Before the school year ends, schools invite Youth Services librarians to promote summer reading in fun and lively presentations. This partnership allows us to promote our incentive-based program to thousands of area students.
Other community partners help us make summer reading fun!

When New York Times reporter Bill Carter recently broke the story that NBC was planning on gently escorting Tonight Show host Jay Leno out the door for a younger, fresher face, it felt a little like déjà vu. That's because the same decision happened about ten years ago.
Carter's definitely the most qualified person to reveal such information. The news made me seek out his book, The Late Shift. The title is a breakthrough account of the shake-up at NBC after Johnny Carson surprisingly announced his plan to retire within a year. The network famously snubbed their Late Night host, David Letterman by hiring Leno, who had been a successful guest host for the legendary Carson.
We were recently interviewed for possible inclusion in a book about word-of-mouth-marketing. The authors are intrigued with how we market our library services and resources not just to our patrons, but also to our funding organizations, other libraries, and other organizations. For example, staff have used free software programs to create a video entitled "Who Needs the Public Library?," which you can view on YouTube in our crrlvideo "channel."
