Masters of the Art Song
"Art Songs," also known as "lieder" in German & "melodies" in French, as well as in other languages, were a new musical form of the 19th century. They are songs with poetic texts written for a vocalist and with usually a piano accompaniment. Some composers wrote "song cycles" containing numerous songs held together using various themes or elements. Each song a jewel, a little diamond expressing a myriad of emotions. Sometimes the recordings mentioned in the CRRL collection do not have a booklet with the text translated into English. If this is the case, go to www.recmusic.org/lied. Click on the composer & then click on the appropiate song title or "song cycle."
