August Is American Artist Appreciation Month

In my last column, I mentioned that one of the perks of working in a library is that you learn something new every day. This helps immensely when trying to decide upon a topic for an article with a deadline fast approaching. Fortuitously, an email I recently received from one of our library vendors announced that August is American Artist Appreciation Month, which was big news and a big inspiration (read big relief!) to me. So, here’s my take on how the library can inspire you to celebrate American artists.

Camping, fishing, hiking, history, grand vistas, and horseback riding--there are so many possibilities in our national parks.

Born August 5, 1930, Neil Armstrong has been an aviator, test pilot, and university professor. And, on July 21, 1969, he became the first man to walk on the moon. In the days before the Internet or cable television, people around the world gathered around their sets to watch history being made.

You and your out-of-town guests have survived a blistering day of fun in the Virginia sunshine. Now comes the gracious hour to unwind in the shade. Something icy or relaxing to drink is certainly called for. And, as the conversation continues, your guests realize they are just a little bit hungry. Although it's too soon for dinner plans, this late afternoon sojourn is a perfect time for tapas. The light and delightful nibbles from Spain are memorable way to treat your guests—and yourself.
