From October 21-24, Porter Branch will again host the annual Stafford Piecemakers Quilt Show, featuring some of the best handmade masterpieces in the area. Admission is free, and you can vote for your favorite entries in various categories, including Viewers’ Choice. The theme this year is “The Language of Quilts” and includes a challenge to the members to create small quilts, each featuring a word that begins with the first letter of his or her name. A certified quilt appraiser will be available by appointment to value your cherished family quilts. Call the Porter research desk at 540-659-4909 for more information about fees and making an appointment.
Every morning, Patricia (Trisha) Polacco wakes to the sounds of singing birds on her old Michigan farm. She goes downstairs, pours herself a cup of coffee, and then plays an antique music box, enjoying its magical beauty. She then sits in her favorite chair, rocks and rocks, and dreams of stories, old and new, that she can tell to children through her words and her drawings.
Faith Ringgold is an artist who uses different materials to tell the stories that are important to her family and her people. Whether working with quilting squares, African masks, paint and brush, or her own words, Faith gives the rich colors and textures a life of their own. There's motion in her work, a striving upward and pushing at the edges of her world.
Local Fredericksburg author and crafter Jodie Rackley helps you stitch up a smile with her book, Happy Stitch. She stitches her fun designs in her home studio in Fredericksburg, which she shares with her pets, Captain Nibbles and Sleepy Kitty. The 30 charming and colorful felt and fabric projects in her book are uber cute.
Take some time this summer and stitch up a Monster Face Computer Cover or doodle on a denim skirt. If your older children are complaining of boredom, try one of the projects with them; for example, the Anytime Ornaments have simple cutting and stitching instructions that an older child can follow with a little guidance. Her instructions are clear, and she uses simple techniques.

There are some things which are hard and painful to understand. Slavery. Skyscrapers exploding. War. Tsunamis. Even famous people's ordinary lives.
But in a true story, there may also be courage, hope, love, and determination. When Jeanette Winter tells her readers of historic events and people, she makes sure the stories carry not only the frightening pieces but the parts that leaven the misery as well.
