Lonely after a midsummer move to a new town, sixteen-year-old high-school quarterback Marcus Jordan becomes friends with a retired professional linebacker who is great at training him, but whose childish behavior keeps Marcus in hot water.
Though Doug recently moved to "stupid Marysville" with the rest of his family, he's on his own. His dad shows no appreciation for him. His brother is a junior criminal in the making. Everyone, from shopkeepers to the school principal, think that Doug is some skinny thug. At first, Doug just wants to be left alone. But with some help and acceptance from others, Doug starts to recognize some true talents, and find some much needed self-esteem.
