National Get Outdoors Day (or GO Day) celebrates its 10-year anniversary on June 10, 2017! GO Day encourages healthy, active outdoor fun—from traditional outdoor activities, such as hiking, to non-traditional outdoor activities, such as reading your favorite book about nature or even having an outdoor, nature-related storytime!
Online privacy has been in the news a lot lately. In response to this renewed concern, I’m hearing two main solutions emerge in the chatter among the digerati, one good, one less so. Let’s start with the latter: Web traffic “noise generators.” Noise generators are plug-ins that rapidly open and close browser tabs to random sites. The idea is to hide your genuine Web activity in a haze of random, meaningless traffic. Don’t bother. Obfuscation methods like these will hinder data miners not one bit.
The other idea is to use a VPN or Virtual Private Network. When you connect to sites through a VPN, information about you and the site you’re visiting is funneled through an encrypted network that your ISP (Internet service provider) cannot detect. VPNs are especially handy for public wifi when you want to make sure that no one else on the network can spy on what you’re doing.
Fifty members of the Patawomeck tribe will recreate one of their villages at the library. On the front lawn, you’ll smell venison and fish roasting on an open fire, hear live Patawomeck music, explore a longhouse, sit in a 13-foot canoe, and see Patawomeck dancing. You and your family can pound cornmeal, play Indian football, play drums, and meet a Pocahontas reenactor. Inside the theatre, you’ll see artifacts that are 10,000 years old, learn how regalia is made, hear Patawomeck storytelling, watch a movie, and make crafts.
Save the date: Saturday, August 5, from 9:00-3:00 at Headquarters Library. This event will be cancelled if there is rain.
With Central Rappahannock Regional Library’s 3rd annual CRRL-Con coming up on May 20, now is the perfect time to indulge your comic book craving. Whether you are new to comics, getting back to them after a break, or have always been a comic book fan, the variety of characters and storylines in comics means there is always something out there to entertain you. The public library has an extensive collection of comic books and provides a great way to “test drive” something new to see if you like it. Checking comics out means you can try one and, if you don’t like it, return it and try another, no financial commitment needed. You can even borrow several and see which is your favorite. The library has the big names, like Thor, Spider-Man, Superman, Batman, and even Archie and Casper. But the possibilities are endless, so here are a few more suggestions.
Join us for Fun Fest, and wrap up the summer with a fun, family-friendly celebration at the library.
Organizations from across our community will gather at Fun Fest to celebrate children, families, and the fun of summer with games, activities, ice pops, and more. You might make bubbles or play a bean bag toss game. You might see dogs or ponies. Each library will have something special to enjoy. Visit more than one Fun Fest to multiply your fun!
In summer, CRRL's young readers have learned to expect an extra helping of everything we typically offer. Cool events for teens, summer reading with prizes, Fun Fest events, and special classes with wildlife, just to name a few. But did you know that we also offer nutritious lunches for young readers?
If you enjoy bird watching, looking at insects and animals up close, or taking hikes in the forest, then CRRL’s Adventure Packs are for you!
Ready to start your summer with a smash? With everything from pizza and a movie to games and friends, the CRRL invites all teens to relax and have fun at our annual Super Summer Smash events.
The fun starts at the Porter Branch on Friday, June 16, and at the Headquarters Library on Saturday, June 17. Both events are from 6:00-8:00 for teens in grades 6-12. The library will be closed to everyone but you at these special after-hours events.
Not every child today learns in a big building with lots of other students all studying the same things at the same time. In the past twenty years, the homeschool phenomenon has caught fire across America.
