Vietnam-Era Photo Project

As part of our NEA Big Read of Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried, we need your photos to tell the story of life at home and overseas during the Vietnam era (1965-1975). Please select one of these methods to share up to five original photos between January 1-March 31, which the library may use online and/or in library branches.

  1. If your photos are already in digital format, you can upload them to our website.

  2. You can scan your photos yourself, using a smartphone. We recommend the Google PhotoScan app, available for free from both the Google Play and the Apple App Store. After you scan your photos, select the 5 best to upload here. Read these PhotoScan download instructions for iOS and Android.

  3. We are happy to help! Bring your photos into your local branch for assistance with scanning. We’ll guide you through using the scanner and uploading them to the website, starting January 2.

How will the photos be used?

Selections will be included in digital or print displays in branches and online, starting March 1. Photos may also be used in future library publicity.
