Collection FAQs

  • General Questions

For our print magazines, you can access our library catalog online. If you choose to search the catalog by subject, say for education journals, then type in "education periodicals" (without the quotes!). You will obtain a listing of our holdings in journals/magazines about education.

You can also search by the specific journal title you need. We also have a collection of downloadable digital magazines, opens a new window, offered to library cardholders. To see all eMagazine options, go here.

Holds are cancelled for a variety of reasons. Usually the material has been lost or damaged, and a replacement is no longer available to purchase through our regular library vendors. Holds on digital items can be cancelled when that item is no longer available from our vendor or is not selected for repurchase.

For physical items, if you want this exact item, we can try to borrow it for you from another library through the Interlibrary Loan Service., opens a new window There is a small fee to cover shipping.

If you would like something similar to that item or on that subject, librarians are happy to assist you., opens a new window

  • Interlibrary Loan

Fill out this form online. Research desks at all branches have a paper form as well.

Most libraries will not loan their new books. Try our Suggest a Purchase service for anything less than 6 months old.

ILL (interlibrary loan) services are available to CRRL resident card-holders in good standing. Customers from other jurisdictions should initiate an ILL from their home libraries.

The lending library sets the due date. If you will need it longer, please contact:

    Interlibrary Loan Assistant, Anna Milton
    Email: ill@crrl.org
    Phone: 540-372-1144 ext. 7035

We will contact the lending library and get back to you.

There is a flat fee of $5.00 per item borrowed, even if you do not pick up the item. This covers the postage to mail the item between libraries. Some libraries charge an extra fee to loan materials - but we will always check with you before moving forward.

Once the ILL fee is added to your account, you can pay it online by logging into your online account and going to the Fees page. You can also pay in the branch via card, check, or cash when picking up the ILL.

Note: items loaned from the University of Mary Washington and links to digital formats incur no charge.

Interlibrary loans can take 3-6 weeks, depending on the availability of the item. For status inquiries, please contact:

    Interlibrary Loan Assistant, Anna Milton
    Email: ill@crrl.org
    Phone: 540-372-1144 ext. 7035

Returns are accepted 24/7 via bookdrops or in branches during open hours. However, Interlibrary Loans must be returned to a staff person.
